| Tiri Matangi Island Tiritiri Matangi ('looking to the wind'or'wind tossing about') lies 4km off the coast of Whangaparaoa Peninsula. Tiritiri Matangi is a scientific reserve and a sanctuary for rare wildlife. Visitors are welcome but are asked to treat the island with care and respect. By 1900 centuries of Maori occupation followed by European farming had turned most of Tiritiri into rolling grassland, with only a few pockets of forest remaining. Now, Tiritiri is being replanted with native trees, both to accelerate the natural regeneration of the coastal forest, and to provide a rich and varied habitat for bird species |
